6th February at 7.30 pm was a story produced
by Claire Moody showing the Party Bus
Industry in Perth.
Nightcruisers were heavily featured being
the largest Party Bus Tours Company in WA
with the biggest range of Tours and the
largest fleet in a growing industry.
It included on-board filming of a NC
Hens Party
and an
18th Birthday
celebration.
Roland Ott also spoke about the NC "Divorce
Party" and many other
Nightcruiser scenes. Nightcruiser Party Bus

In an era when booze buses are about as
common as binge drinking, it's not
surprising that the combination has led to
the growth of an industry selling safe
transport between pubs and clubs. They're
called party buses and their numbers have
multiplied over recent years, along with a
crackdown on drink driving. But as more of
the buses hit the road, there's concern that
while improving road safety, the organised
pub crawls could be leading to other
problems instead. Claire Moodie reports on
moves to regulate the party bus industry.
CLAIRE MOODIE, REPORTER: It may look like a
perfectly normal single decker bus, but this
driver is actually at the helm of a
nightclub on wheels.
Tonight's exuberant cargo is a bride-to-be
and her friends, who've hired the bus to
ferry them around Perth's most popular night
spots.
The first stop on the pub crawl is The
Paddington in Mount Hawthorn.
PARTY BUS BRIDE-TO-BE: The benefits of a
party bus, I think, is that you get to go to
a number of different places and just have
fun at different venues. Yeah, yeah,
definitely. And then we get to see strippers
at the end of the night. (Laughs).
CLAIRE MOODIE: And there's no shortage of
bus companies trying to corner the market.
It's become a fiercely competitive industry
where there's a party tailored to almost
every occasion, even if it seems there's not
much to celebrate.
ROLAND OTT, NIGHTCRUISER: Remember when you
got married and he wanted you to get rid of
all the girlfriends and she wanted him to
get rid of all the fellas? Well, what a
perfect opportunity to - inviting everybody
again, you know? And celebrate and say,
"Well, I'm available again!"
CLAIRE MOODIE: But while some venues work
well with the buses, the number making them
welcome is shrinking.
The hotel industry says several bars have
banned party buses and there could be more
to follow.
BRADLEY WOODS, AUSTRALIAN HOTELS ASSOC.:
With the Western Australian police force
spending a lot more resources, spending a
lot more time focusing on trying to find
people in licensed premises who may be
intoxicated, it's coming to a point where
licensees can't afford to have these party
buses visit for fear that they're gonna get
prosecuted.
CLAIRE MOODIE: There's no evidence to
suggest party bus passengers drink any more
than other pub goers, but they do tend to
come in large groups.
MIKE GREEN, WEMBLEY POLICE: I wouldn't like
to say it's a pack mentality but when people
in the community see large groups of people
making lots of noise, that does create
concern for them.
CLAIRE MOODIE: Here in Leederville, the
local Mayor Nick Catania has been taking a
firm stand against the party bus industry.
NICK CATANIA, TOWN OF VINCENT: People were
coming out of licensed premises with drinks
in their hand, throwing their glasses or the
cans or the bottles on the ground, urinating
against shop windows, yelling and screaming
and causing a great amount of stress to the
businesses and the patrons in the area.
CLAIRE MOODIE: The local authority together
with the police has come up with a code of
conduct. As part of the accord, buses are
being provided with designated drop-off and
pick-up areas and they're to be met by
security staff from the venues. In return,
drivers have to ensure among other things
that there's no alcohol consumed on buses.
Buses are booked in with venues ahead of
their arrival and that transport is refused
to those who've had one too many.
But it's that last condition that most
concerns some operators who've agreed to
support the new regime but are worried how
it's going to work in practice.
MELISSA MACNISH, PURPLE PARTY BUSES: They
don't want us to bring passengers in that
that may be a little bit disorderly or
intoxicated. I think that's gonna be our
biggest - it's the hard one! I don't quite
know how we're gonna get away with that.
CLAIRE MOODIE: Many of the companies already
have rules they say are strictly enforced
and believe the onus should be on passengers
to take responsibility for their own
behaviour.
MELISSA MACNISH: Unless the police punish
those that are doing the wrong thing, it's
never gonna change.
MIKE GREEN: We will target the individuals
if they're committing a criminal offence or
an offence under the Liquor Act. But the
driver also has an obligation that if
they're aware that people are drinking and
they're allowing it, they're enabling the
offence to occur.
CLAIRE MOODIE: For others, the new accord is
a welcome step. Former DJ Clyde D'Vaz is
concerned about the increase in excessive
drinking among young people. There's not
much he hasn't seen in 10 years behinds the
wheel.
CLYDE D'VAZ, CLYDES BUS CHARTER SERVICE: The
biggest problem is people urinating on my
buses. If they don't have a tree or
whatever, they'll just urinate on the bus
itself.
CLAIRE MOODIE: So, given the problems with
binge drinking, should we be concerned about
the growth of an industry which essentially
sells pub crawls? Well, even the police can
see the selling points of party buses.
MIKE GREEN: The bonus for us with party
buses is that people can go out and have a
good time and get home safely. And the
people aren't hanging around in town getting
up to mischief.
CLAIRE MOODIE: And if the buoyant bookings
are anything to go by, there's a growing
market for partying and partying hard.
PARTY BUS BRIDE-TO-BE: It's an organised
night out and so you don't have to stress or
worry about anything else for the whole
night. So, yeah, no. It's - everything's
organised for you and the stress and
everything is - all you have to remember to
do is get on the bus at the end of the
night!
