Sexual friction, savage humour and
verbal pyrotechnics charge this explosive depiction of
a dysfunctional family torn apart by hypocrisy greed
and secret passions.
The classic American
play won a New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award and a
Pulitzer Prize when originally staged by Elia Kazan on
Broadway in 1954. It achieved enormous success as a
film starring Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman in the
leading roles. The play has continued to stun
audiences throughout the world. A recent Broadway
revival has enjoyed tremendous success in London’s
West End.
The play tells the
story of two brothers (and their wives) vying for the
inheritance of their dying father amid a whirlwind of
sexuality untethered and the burden of repressed love.
Tensions mount between alcoholic former football hero,
Brick and his beautiful, sexually frustrated wife,
Maggie ‘the Cat’. As their troubled relationship comes
to a stormy and steamy climax, a shockwave of secrets
is finally revealed.

delicately wrought exercise in human communication.
[Williams’] characters try to escape from the
loneliness of their private lives into some form of
understanding. The truth invariably terrifies them.

wrote Atkinson in the New York Times.
The 1974 revival
“displays the work as something clearer than it seemed
to be in its original and vastly successful Broadway
run… An unresolved mystery has always seemed to
envelope Brick… The answer comes exacerbatingly
clear,” wrote Walter Kerr in the New York Times.
