MANDURAH AND
PEEL DISTRICT WINERY GUIDE |
AMARILLO VINES
23
Marlock Place, Karnup
In 1995
Colin and Chris Ashby, planted 250 vines on their
property, merely with the intention to keep family and
friends supplied with wine. In 1997, before their
first vintage, their hobby turned into something more
serious and their small vineyard expanded to 2,500
vines.
To
counter act the destructiveness of the birds, a
permanent net canopy was built over the vineyard,
protecting the plantings of Shiraz, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Verdelho and Grenache.
Amarillo vines (Amarillo is the name of the 7,000 acre
farm of which the development of Amarillo become part
of), believes every grape and it's quality is
important. A good wine starts in the vineyard, so the
lyre trellis system is used to increase grape maturity
and quality, while maintaining top production levels.
All grapes are handpicked.
The
winemaking process occurs at Tuart Ridge and is then
returned to Amarillo for labelling and cellar door
sales.
The cellar is open most days, a phone
call before visiting could avoid disappointment. Wine
prices range from $12 to $16 and a small picnic & BBQ
area adjoins the cellar.

PEEL RIDGE
48
Winery Drive, Karnup
The small family operated vineyard is situated in the
Peel Wine Region adjacent to the cities of Mandurah
and Rockingham. At Peel Ridge they believe that
quality wines begin in the vineyard. Their grapes
are grown in our small 5 acre vineyard and tended by
hand enabling them to focus on producing quality
grapes for premium wines.
The vineyard is set out around the tall Tuart trees
which indicate the soils sought after by discerning
grape growers. The proximity of the coast ensures
the ripening grapes are cooled by the sea breeze on
even the hottest of days in the long Western
Australian summer. Their vines are control irrigated
using high quality water to maintain optimum soil
moisture levels during all stages of vine growth.
These factors contribute to the production of high
quality wines.
They are open for tastings and sales of our range from
11am to 3pm on weekends

THE PEEL REGION
The Peel
region, with its close proximity to Perth, is a perfect
destination for a day trip. Chenin Blanc and Shiraz are
regional specialties.
The region includes the Peel Inlet a large body of water
just south of Mandurah. The town of Williams lies on its
eastern boundary.
The Mediterranean climate varies the further inland you
travel, as the cooling, moderating effects of the ocean
diminish.
The soils vary across the region from 'tuart' sandy soil
on the coast to loams and gravely soils further inland.
Peel has since its early days been an important
agricultural and mining area.
As with much of Western Australia there were vineyards
established during the 1930s by Italian immigrants, but it
wasn't until the 1970s
that sustained development took hold. They grow
Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Semillon and Verdelho and
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz. |
