3RD CLASS
Duckboard Place, Melbourne
More minimalist than
minimalist; barren would be the better word for it. Black
walls, black floor, black roof. But the DJ line-up is
decent, and that seems to be what counts.
Getting in isn't as tricky as it was during the Honky
Tonks days, however it's common for the door to employ a
guest list only policy after about 1am.
Our tip: The drinks menu has all sorts worth trying - the
rave juice served in a plastic bag, for example.
6 LINKS

linked'. With three separate areas and a heap of
comfortable couches and ottomans, 6 Links definitely has
that 'wow' factor. With a terrific selection of beers on
tap - some you'll be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in
the city, a free pool table, and affordable drink prices,
you'll soon see why this place is fast becoming a
Melbourne institution.
Nightly happy hours make it even more irresistible. Come
and get linked with us - sample our wines, order something
from our sexy shooters list, or maybe go for a cocktail -
whatever tickles your fancy!

Chapel Street, South Yarra
A traditional Irish pub that prides itself on good
service, great food, & a fantastic range of International
beers on tap, including Guinness of course.
Bridie's has been on Chapel St. for some 8 years now &
over the years has built up a great regular clientele from
local workers out for a quick lunch right through to
others out for a dance on Friday or Saturday nights.
Also just given their beer garden a well earned face lift
making for a more European style thats better suited to al
fresco dining & encourages people to mingle, adding to the
great social aspect they've always had.
BRIDIE O'REILLY'S (LITTLE
COLLINS STREET)
Melbournes original Irish pub
that prides itself on good service, great food, and
a fantastic range of International beers on tap,
including Guinness of course. Bridie's Lt Collins
St over the years has built up a great regular
clientele from local workers out for a quick lunch
right through to party goers.
Every Friday and Saturday night they have great live
entertainment from 10pm in the evening.
On Friday they have
KRUSTY

past.
Then on Saturday night they have

They really keep the crowd going all night and most
Saturdays there is barely any room on the dance
floor.
BROWN ALLEY -
The Place For Any
Occasion
Comprising three separate
staircases that lead to four independent rooms Brown
Alley lends itself to being a venue of choice for
holding smaller dance parties and private functions
as it can easily be broken up to accommodate
multiple events on the same night.
With direct street access to all rooms independently
if required, each room at Brown Alley can be
isolated individually to maintain exclusivity
without compromising integrity of ambience and
atmosphere.
All rooms come complete with their own dance floor,
full bar and toilet facilities not to forget great
décor and individual character. Of coarse all rooms
are installed with one of Melbourne’s best sound
systems, a full scale Martin sound system that
caters to all DJ requirements.
With minimal venue hire fees depending on the
occasion, and nearly all production requirements in
house, when combined with reasonable drink prices,
and flexible hours of operation, Brown Alley stacks
up against any venue alternative.
Brown Alley - The Layout
Entering the venue from the discreet Brown Alley
entrance (Which is situated off Lonsdale Street near
the corner of King Street) you enter the venue via a
small staircase to arrive on the mezzanine level.
Brown Alley Room 1-
The Mezzanine
With a holding capacity of approximately 200 people
The Mezzanine over looks the main room, looking down
over the main dance floor. The mezzanine with its
stained wooden ceilings and exposed wooden beams is
complimented by blue stone walls, featured brick
archways, and stained glass windows and is further
modernized with its ambient light shades, funky
couches and bean bags, to create a great space with
a relaxed ambience.
CHERRY
103 Flinders Lane Melbourne
1st report:
Tucked away in one of many of Melbourne's intriguing
lanes, Cherry is trendy without being exclusive.
Cherry is such a fun place. It has a dance area and
a stage for when you get really drunk and feel the
need to make a "prat" of yourself (I have done this
numerous amounts of times now; I have no shame).
Wear pretty much what you like - the only item
you're required to wear is a smile, which, believe
me, is not difficult.
Each night is usually a different night, be it
rock’n’roll, soul, or disco. The red graffiti-style
bar is a nifty touch, as is the range of beers, such
as England's Newcastle Brown Ale and San Miguel.
It's quite a small place, so arrive early on the
weekends to avoid disappointment!
2nd
Report:
It's late on a Saturday night and you want to dance.
And not just move your head back and forth to an R&B
beat but REALLY DANCE! The answer to your problem
comes in the form of Cherry, one of Melbourne's best
dance bars. Tucked down one of the little side
alleys just off of Flinders Lane, you can hear
Cherry before you see it. Weekend nights you'll pay
about $5 to $15, depending on if they have a band or
not. Thursdays Cherry is known for its groovy funk
and '70s-style music. Saturday you'll find a mix of
anything goes. Either way, Cherry breeds an
atmosphere of fun. It doesn't matter how crazy
you're dancing; the guy next to you is going just as
mental.
Entering Cherry, you'll be greeted by usually two
bouncers and a girl at the front desk (to take your
entrance fee and check your coat if need be). It's
not a big bar, just one large room with one bar, a
dance floor two steps down, and a stage (for those
of you who want to be seen dancing). It's usually
pretty dark and grungy, but there's a certain rocker
charm about the place. There is plenty of sitting
room with cushioned seating around the dance floor
and by the bar. Drinks aren't too pricey. A bottle
of Crown will set you back $5, while most other
bottles are around $6. Mixed are around $6 to $7.
It's a pretty basic beer-and-spirits bar, but if you
want the odd cocktail I'm sure the friendly bar
staff will look after you.
I would highly recommend Cherry to anyone seeking a
night out where they want to dance and don't want to
deal with the usual "poser" pretence at other clubs.
Open til 2am Sun-Thurs and 5am Fri-Sat.

DING
DONG LOUNGE
Level 1/ 18 Market Lane Melbourne Ph:
9662 1020
This is the sister bar to the legendary rock 'n' roll
hangout in New York of the same name. It's backed by Bill
Walsh of Cherry, and acts are booked by Luke Roberts (the
guy who brought us the White Stripes, among others). This
pair are so cool they booked The 5678's before they
appeared in Tarantino's Kill Bill. In short, rock
'n' roll is Ding Dong's raison d'etre, and it does it so
well, from the beer taps shaped like guitar necks to the
eclectic roster of live and vinyl music.
Unsurprisingly, it's populated by a mix of punters of all
ages who dig old-school rock 'n' roll, plus local Celebes
from the low-fi rock 'n' roll scene, which makes it a very
comfortable place if you're over 30 but still have
Jonathon Richman on high rotation. Long comfy booths line
the walls; there's a big high table in the centre of the
room; and plenty of space to boogie once your beer
quotient reaches "carefree".

DOGS BAR
54 Acland Street St. Kilda
A St. Kilda Institution
This is one of Melbourne's great bars, loved by its St
Kilda locals and by folks who want to be by the sea on
weekends. In winter two roaring fires keep drinkers warm,
in summer the open concertina doors let the summer breeze
in, and the sun seekers out. There are always interesting
wines by the glass and some good snacks. It was part of
Lion Nathan's 1999 pub purchases and was sold to David
Carruthers, an ex-manager of their pub company
(Hospitality Management Company).
Friendly staff, open fires, people watching terraces, over
150 wines - 24 by the glass, 18 bottled beers & Becks on

ELEPHANT AND WHEELBARROW
MELBOURNE
94 -96 Bourke Street
ST KILDA
169 Fitzroy Street
The chains of Irish and, in this case English, Mc-pubs are
creating a bit of the old country in the most unlikely
places. The former Ritz, now the Elephant and Wheelbarrow,
has seen some fairly inglorious times, and had its fair
share of convicts in its guise as nightclub-cum-pick-up
joint.
Now an English Inn, the upper storey windows are decorated
with fake window boxed flowers for the backpacker
residents, and customers on the footpath are penned in by
alternating picket fences and plastic hedges. The inside
is lined with dark timber, booths, lots of fabric, ye olde
lead lighting, and 22 beers on tap.
With three bars on busy nights it becomes a regular
suburban beer barn in a Sherlock Holmes disguise. Tartan
waistcoats help identify the target bartenders from the
groups of men and women largely on the prowl on the
weekends - some things don't change in a place no matter
how you decorate it. Week days and nights the pace is
slower and the mini beer garden out the front more a place
to watch the world from.
Irish and particularly English pubs are mainly thought of
in Australia as having stodgy food and warm beer, and even
accounting for these things being remedied, one can only
put their spectacular success in attracting customers down
to a resurgence in a desire for a full and rich
atmosphere. The Elephant and Wheelbarrow has loads of it.
ELEVEN
321 Bay St Port Melbourne
This smart new bar has something for everyone. Drop into
the sunny lounge for breakfast. Stop off on the way home
for a pre-dinner cocktail. Hang around for some tapas or
hang around longer to dance off the tapas to an eclectic
mix of blues, reggae and electronic sounds (there's even a
BYO vinyl DJ competition on Sunday afternoons). The snugly
blankets folded on the sofas are a nice touch, as is the
super-friendly service.
ESPLANADE HOTEL
11 Upper Esplanade, St Kilda
The Espy, as it's affectionately known, is a Melbourne
institution and synonymous with the old St Kilda scene.
Nick Cave and the Birthday Party played here in the late
70s, when St Kilda was a place of low morals, hard rockers
and bohemians. These days, the Espy is a place to drink
beer, listen to comedy, catch some live music and shoot
some pool. St Kilda might be a dilution of the old
concentrate, but the Espy is still wonderfully grungy and
haunted by the ghosts of Melbourne's gritty past.
Also, on average, 40 bands play at the Esplanade Hotel in
St Kilda each week, more than 2000 each year.

house music on Friday and Saturday includes regular

INHOUSE
422 R&B FRIDAYS @ BALCONY
This 300 capacity cocktail bar is Melbournes hottest new
venue and is aimed squarely at women, right down to the
rubber compound floor which has been designed to go easy
on those standing up in stilettos.
They have masterminded Melbourne's "true cocktail
experience" in a sleek, sophisticated and elegant
environment.
The interior features touches like a white leather
cushioned bar with a soft pink fluorescent light and a
timber outdoor decking complete with a glass balcony which
offers street views.
The Dj booth is the real focus and the envy of the local
scene as you can watch your favourite DJ belt out the
newest mixes from behind a large blue tinted circular
window.
The venue has Jimmy Javni and Anthony Edge who have worked
in the finest venues in Melbourne and Geelong and with the
help of their expert staff, every cocktail will be a must!
The venue also caters for private functions and corporate
and is available for hire but be quick as the diary is
booked out months in advance, no wonder as the secret gets
out you had better hurry or you might find yourself
waiting in line!
KOROVA MILKBAR
12 Burke Street Melbourne
The newly opened Korova Milk Bar does not simply mimic the
futuristic drug den in A Clockwork Orange; it manages even
to outdo Stanley Kubrick's warped vision-and has created a
standard of entertainment that has rarely been seen in
this country. The film may have inspired the bar's
black-and-white mannequin motif, but Korova's uniquely
distorted paintwork, based on the art of Felice Verini
which sees two-dimensional images cleverly played out in
three-dimensional space must be seen to be fully
appreciated.
The venue
also has employed the services of a World Class
Hypnollusionist, James Dehombre. What is a Hypnollusionist
you say? It is a performer who is a Master Hypnotist,
Master Magician and Master Illusionist! The few
Melbournians who have been lucky enough to encounter this
Mystery Man in the flesh in Melbourne's most exclusive
venues will attest to his skill and entertainment value.
It's the
versatility of this an an entertainment space however that
is its real asset. Moving from a comfortable After-Work
Cocktail Lounge from 5pm and then turning into one of the
cities most prominent late night music venues from 10pm.
The most
fiendish "droogs", however come to Korova for Moloko,
potent fruit/ice-cream-based cocktails satirically named
after macabre subject matter. Evening hours are a treat at
Korova with James Dehombre performing while guest Dj's
regularly appearing to play a multitude of music that
varies from rolling minimal tech rhythm's through to a
multitude of styles of house music.
