BAAA BAR @ OLD WOOLSTORE HOTEL
1 Macquarie Street

BIRDCAGE PIANO BAR
Wrest Point Casino, 410 Sandy Bay Road Sandy Bay , Hobart
So named because of the gold bars which enclose it, this bar is located right inside the front entrance to the hotel. This is a very popular late night and live music spot. The circular shape with a central bar reinforces the birdcage theme. Outside, a waterfall provides a soothing background. Drinks are top of the range with prices to match. Expect to pay in excess of $10 for a cocktail.

CLUB SURREAL
St Ives Hotel, 86 Sandy Bay Road Sandy Bay, Hobart
The music belts out late into the night in this popular nightspot. Students love it because their ID card will get them in free before midnight on Fridays, but any night will see the place jammed to the rafters with party animals. Talk about split personality! The olde worlde entrance with its panelled walls does not prepare you for the silver pleasure palace that awaits you once you climb the sweeping staircase. You can slide down to the bar for drinks, food or coffee.

GILT LOUNGE BAR & RESTAURANT

Sitting on the comfy front verandah at Gilt and looking over the expansive lawn to the hedge, it can be hard to remember this gorgeous oasis is right on bustling Sandy Bay Road.

The food is balanced and healthy. Muffins and light cafe snacks are available, but more serious hunger pangs can be satiated on anything from light meals with an organic leaning to full dinners, again with an emphasis on wholesome. Live music entertains from Thursdays to Saturdays, ranging from jazz to acoustic performances by local singer/songwriters. The fully licensed bar, comfy couches and open fire all combine to make this a cultured and delightful little Sandy Bay hideaway.

REGINES
410 Sandy Bay Road, Wrest Point Casino, Hobart
Once you find it (it is tucked away) there is no mistaking you are in a serious Hobart nightspot. The walls seem to expand to hold the crowd. It is dark, dark, dark, so the large video screens are effective. Three DJs play music to suit the mood, but it is mostly dance. There is no food except a snack machine but the bar runs hot with full service. Prices vary according to your choice of drink. A cocktail will not leave much change out of $10. Admission: A$3 Fri; $5 Sat; no charge other nights.

ROYAL HOBART REGATTA PAVILION & GROUNDS
2 Davies Ave, Queens Domain

SIR WILLIAM DON HOTEL
304 Elizabeth St Hobart

SYRUP NIGHTCLUB
39 Salamanca Place, Hobart
This upstairs space seems to handle its split personality extremely well. Round midnight, restaurant seamlessly becomes nightclub. Young, cool, casual, simple, the tables are paper covered, the floor wooden. There is even a pool table. The crowd tends to be young, anticipating the nightclub metamorphosis. The food here is highly regarded with the kitchen unafraid to experiment with seasonal produce in interesting combinations of flavour and texture. Entrees are around $9. Two of these would leave room for one of the renowned desserts. There is a reasonable wine list.
