New Sapphire Suite on the
Cross
Wednesday
to Saturday 7 pm till late
It hasn't taken people long
to discover Sapphire Suite
- there are already healthy
crowds, with most looking
like the young, cool set
that management hopes to
attract. Staff are friendly
and mix a good cocktail,
and the atmosphere is free
from that edge of tension
you often find in the Cross.
This new kid on the block
is actually the old Icebox
nightclub with an extreme
makeover. The owners have
erased all memories of the
venue's rough former identity
with a swish, slick redesign
aimed at enticing the Hugo's
Lounge crowd and their discerning
mates. |

Sometimes you need a break
from cool. You want to jig
around to dance tunes you
recognise, watched by old
black and white photos of
Liza Minnelli and Barbra
Streisand. Perhaps you're
over 30, and yearn for '80s
music and tributes to your
idols plastered on the walls.
So you come to the Iguana,
with its distinguished music
industry history, faded
glam and defiantly unhip
interior and have a darn
fine, rip-roaring, daggy
old time, way into the early
hours. People have been
doing this in the Iguana
since this part of town
was still muso-central,
and thankfully the old trouper
shows no sign of slowing
up. At 3am, when we finally
ran out of steam, the floor
was still packed.
